From my experience, WP eCommerce is adequate if you’re only featuring a handful of products. However, if you’re got a full line of 10 or more products, I would look into something else. In my opinion, it’s best suited for small scale online business owners who don’t want to invest a large amount of money into an eCommerce platform. When this is the case and your needs are slight, then this plugin should be sufficient. But if you’re looking to launch a large scale online store or plan on adding more products in the future, then you’re probably better off with a more robust platform.
In terms of pros, I liked the fact that there was a pretty decent selection of themes, which could be used for many industries. I also liked that I can use several different payment gateways, which made handling transactions fairly straightforward. The built in marketing features are nice because it can help boost sales without any additional effort. Besides this, you can offer discount pricing and coupons without much trouble.
However, I didn’t like the fact that it was somewhat difficult to figure out and felt strange to use for awhile. It can also be a little clunky. For example, whenever you’re managing the store and using the admin settings, it can seem pretty arduous.
The bottom line is that I would consider WP eCommerce to be pretty mediocre. If you’re just starting out and have minimal needs without all of the bells and whistles, then I would give it a try. Otherwise, if you have a serious online store, then I would check out alternatives.
